It was designed in 1930 by Shelley Art Director, Eric Slater, who studied under Gordon Forsyth, an advocate of improvement in industrial design. Slater's 'Vogue' shape, was very modern and made from finely-turned high quality bone china, the geometric form was well-matched with a range of dynamic Art Deco patterns, such as Red Blocks, which has the appealing addition of silver lustre.","physicalDescription":"Square side plate, bone china, with wavy curved corners, black printed, with pattern of overlapping blocks in red and black enamel colours and silver lustre.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Slater, Eric","id":"A10954"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Shelley Potteries","id":"A10956"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bone china, jiggered, printed in black and painted in enamel colours and lustre","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2020ML4474","2020ML4475"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES333524"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Side plate","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Fenton","id":"x30223"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1930-1931","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1931-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x30230"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1930-1931","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1931-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Kay Rush","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"16.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Shelley' within a cartouche, 'ENGLAND', and indistinct registered mark,  printed in green","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"printed","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Maker's identification","note":"Maker's identification; printed"},{"content":"'11781', painted in red (pattern number)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"painted","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"painted"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Square side plate, bone china, 'Vogue' shape, 'Red Blocks' pattern, designed by Eric Slater, manufactured by Shelley Potteries, Fenton, Staffordshire, England, 1930-1","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.163-2003"],"accessionNumberNum":"163","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2003,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-23","recordCreationDate":"2003-11-27","availableToBook":true}}
