It was designed in 1930 by Shelley Art Director, Eric Slater, who studied under Gordon Forsyth, an advocate of improvement in industrial design. Slater's 'Vogue' shape was very modern and made from finely-turned high quality bone china. The geometric form was well-matched with a range of dynamic Art Deco patterns. 'Sunray' was one of Shelley's most successful patterns and is now highly-prized by collectors.","physicalDescription":"Side plate, bone china, with stylised sunray design printed in fawn and painted in black and yellow.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Slater, Eric","id":"A10954"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Shelley Potteries","id":"A10956"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bone china, jiggered, printed in fawn and painted in enamel colours","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CD7010","2006AY0342"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"140 (VA)","id":"THES49871"},"free":"","case":"19","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Side plate","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Fenton","id":"x30223"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1930","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1930-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x30230"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1930","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1930-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Kay Rush","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"16.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Shelley' within a cartouche, printed in green","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Maker's identification","note":"Maker's identification"},{"content":"'ENGLAND / Rd.756533', printed in green","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Maker's identification","note":"Maker's identification"},{"content":"'P11742  E', painted in red (pattern number)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Side plate, bone china, 'Vogue' shape, 'Sunray' pattern, designed by Eric Slater, manufactured by Shelley, Fenton, Staffordshire, England, 1930","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.161-2003"],"accessionNumberNum":"161","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2003,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LR1765","2019LT5606","2019LU1171"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2003-11-27","availableToBook":false}}
