It contains 56 folios on which are Mughal paintings, drawings and flower studies dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. The binding is covered with an Indian brocade. The album was given to the museum by Mr John Goelet in 1956.","physicalDescription":"The painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, depicts a tulip plant with flowers in three stages of flowering; the lower one on the left in full bloom, that to the right in bud, and the uppermost one in its over-blown form with the petals beginning to fold back on themselves.  The flowers are orange in colour with yellow and black markings at the base of the petals.  The leaves are shown with ruffled edges growing out of the main stem.  The detailing is achieved through the application of darker tones of pigment.  The plant is shown again against a plain off-white ground of the paper on which it is painted.  It is framed with a simple border of strips of dark grey paper outlined in black and is mounted on the ivory-coloured page which is embellished with strips of greenish-grey paper at its edges with black outlines. It contains 56 leaves on which are Mughal miniature paintings, drawing and flower studies on both sides. The binding is covered with an Indian brocade silk that may have been cut from lengths brought home by the 2nd Lord Clive, who served as Governor of Madras, 1799 to 1803.
