It is one of the many superb caricatures of Edwardian music hall performers that were drawn by the artist George Cooke when he was based at the Grand Theatre. He compiled them in a series of albums. Stanley was on the bill at the Grand that week with Verno & Voyce doing their ‘Jack Sheppard!’ sketch, a double act later drawn by Cooke.\r\n\r\nStanley never became a top-billing comedian, but was one of the hundreds of stand-up comedians earning a living on the halls in the early 1900s. They were useful ‘front curtain’ acts, meaning that scenery could be changed behind the curtain while they did their act in front. This is one of two drawings of Walter Stanley by George Cooke in this collection. The other shows him out of stage costume.","physicalDescription":"Pen, ink and wash caricature on pink paper of Walter Stanley, full-length, wearing a small brown bowler hat, a black jacket, fawn waistcoat and baggy brown trousers, his hands in his pockets.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cooke, George","id":"A10376"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Pen and ink","id":"x30618"},{"text":"Watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Drawn","id":"x30545"},{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink and wash on paper","categories":[{"text":"Caricatures & Cartoons","id":"THES48983"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2006AH2142"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES352333"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Hanley","id":"x32079"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"August 1904","earliest":"1904-08-01","latest":"1904-08-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"24","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Cut from a larger sheet of paper, with corners rounded, and glued into the album.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Yours Faithfully Walter Stanley","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"Pen and ink","method":"Hand written","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"1) Signature","note":"Signature; Hand written; Pen and ink"},{"content":"Sept 3 1904","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"Pen and ink","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Date","note":"Date; Pen and ink"}],"objectHistory":"This caricature is of the music hall comedian Walter Stanley performing at the Grand Theatre of Varieties, Hanley, during the week of the 29th August 1904.
