These were initially produced as complex tile-mosaic, though the designs were later adapted for more standard tile shapes. Originally the tiny roundels and foliate sections of the design of this tile were produced as separate mosaic elements. The roundels contain a lion and gryphon, along with the heads of a king and a bishop or abbot.","physicalDescription":"Tile of red earthenware impressed with a pattern of four roundels containing images of a lion, griffin, an abbot's and a king's head on a field of stylised foliate crosses, inlaid with white clay and partly glazed.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, with inlaid decoration","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"},{"text":"Slipware","id":"THES49020"},{"text":"Tiles","id":"THES48884"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2008BR8821","2006AL6893"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"138","id":"THES49875"},"free":"","case":"1","shelf":"8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tile","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Chertsey Abbey","id":"x37373"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1260-1290","earliest":"1255-01-01","latest":"1290-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"None","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"13.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"1.210","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Originally from Chertsey Abbey.\r\nNote in Register: Found amongst some architectural fragments in the Crypt of the Museum below Room 46 by Mr. Bedford.\n\nHistorical significance: Adapted from earlier designs placed on mosaic tiles, which have been simplified by placing on a square tile.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tile of red earthenware, from Chertsey Abbey.
