As the name suggests, the church of Saint-Pierre-du-Chatel was dedicated to St Peter. This panel is one of three that depict important episodes relating to Peter and the early years of the Christian church. \r\n\r\nDuring his lifetime, Christ named Peter as the leader of the Apostles and thus the foundation stone (Latin petra) of the church. \r\nPeter travelled to Rome on at least two occasions to spread the word of Christ. We know that he was executed there, probably during the period of persecution under the emperor Nero (AD 64–8). The earliest known account describing his death dates from the end of the 2nd century. Here Peter is shown being crucified upside down on a cross. Crucifixion was a common form of execution for non-Roman citizens, and tradition states that Peter refused to be crucified in the same manner as Christ.","physicalDescription":"Stained glass panel depicting the crucifixion of St Peter.\r\nSt Peter, in a long red gown, is shown upside-down. Two men on either side are tying his legs to the inverted cross. \r\nThe slashing on the doublets of the two men who are tying Peter to the cross was done by abrading the flashed red on the clear glass.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"de Nimegue, Arnoult","id":"A15000"},"association":{"text":"painted by","id":"x28695"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"abrasion","id":"AAT53077"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"silver staining","id":"x38899"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Clear and coloured glass with painted details and silver stain.","categories":[{"text":"Access_to_Images 2003","id":"THES48875"},{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"SCRAN","id":"THES48897"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AH5051","2017KE2391"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"83 (VA)","id":"THES49711"},"free":"","case":"S1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Window","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Normandy","id":"x29041"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1525-1530","earliest":"1520-01-01","latest":"1530-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"2207:1-1855","id":"O8597"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"2208-1855","id":"O8598"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"156.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"67.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"12.0","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"150.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sight","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"62.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sight","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"From Saint-Pierre-du-Châtel, Rouen\r\nAcquired from the Bernal Collection","historicalContext":"The same scenes are depicted in glass from Saint-Vincent in Rouen (now in Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, Rouen) and in Notre-Dame du Grand-Andely, Les Andelys.
