Block printing is one of the oldest methods of printing on textiles. Wooden blocks have the pattern cut in relief and each colour in the pattern usually has a separate block. The colour is transmitted from the block face to the cloth by hitting the back of the block with the handle end of a mallet. It is a skilled, often costly and laborious process, and in the 20th century was superseded by mechanised roller and screen printing.","physicalDescription":"Dress fabric of hand block-printed silk.
