Hockney set out to do a book - not the luxury portfolio of prints typical of that moment in art, but a real story book, which would have a narrative illustration for every page of text. Wanting spontaneity, the artist often worked directly on the etching plate rather than doing preparatory drawings. Hockney says that he \"stumbled on\" a way to force exceptionally rich blacks, by building up layers of etched cross-hatching so that the ink got very thick.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"By David Hockney: 'The sexton disguised as a ghost', from the story 'The Boy who left Home to learn Fear', from the portfolio of Six Fairy Tales  from the Brothers Grimm, etching and aquatint, 1970","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Baker, Malcolm, and Brenda Richardson (eds.), <i>A Grand Design: The Art of the Victoria and Albert Museum</i>, London: V&A Publications, 1999.","id":"AUTH348910"},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1971"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Limited edition","id":"THES48862"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[{"text":"Grimm","id":"AUTH333950"}],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"boy","id":"AAT247598"},{"text":"ghost","id":"x37310"},{"text":"Fairy tales","id":"AAT185684"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":["Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm"],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.152-1971"],"accessionNumberNum":"152","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1971,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-29","recordCreationDate":"2003-11-11","availableToBook":false}}
