This brass candlestick with a pricket (as opposed to a socket) to hold the candle in place, is one of a pair. It dates from the 16th century and was probably made in Belgium.\r\n\r\nThe ‘collar’ candlestick cast in brass in three and sometimes four separate sections was immensely popular in the Low Countries until the early 18th century. It was a supremely practical design being sufficiently heavy to sit securely on rough oak tables and yet eminently suitable to be carried around the house as required. The high drip pan protected the hand from hot melted wax.","physicalDescription":"Candlestick, one of a pair, cast brass and turned, of baluster form and with a pricket","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Brass","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Lighting","id":"THES48925"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AK4386"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412420"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Candlestick","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Flanders (region)","id":"x36939"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"},{"place":{"text":"Nord-Pas-de-Calais","id":"x29613"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"16th century","earliest":"1500-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Bernard H.
