Here the potter has covered the earthenware body with slip (liquid clay) to create a white ground. The inscription in Arabic was written in contrasting black slip. As on many Islamic dishes, the inscription offers good wishes for the owner.\r\n\r\nThis dish is an example of a distinctive ceramic tradition that developed in eastern Iran from the 10th century. Potters there took inspiration from indigenous metalwork and applied slip of contrasting colours to create the decoration.","physicalDescription":"Lead-glazed earthenware with slip inscription, \"Blessing and ease to the owner\".","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"slip","id":"AAT10459"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, lead-glazed, inscribed","categories":[{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"},{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"}],"styles":[{"text":"Islamic","id":"x29301"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AF6971","2017JV7165"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"2W","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Miniature dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Iran","id":"x30220"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Uzbekistan","id":"x30632"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"10th century","earliest":"0900-01-01","latest":"1000-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"11.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"1.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Blessing and ease to the owner'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"painted","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"painted"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Small earthenware dish with inscription in black slip, Eastern Iran or Uzbekistan, 900-1000.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Jameel Gallery \r\n\r\n11–13 Dishes with Arabic Inscriptions\r\nEastern Iran or Uzbekistan\r\n900–1000\r\n\r\nThe text on the small dish was carefully executed in thick, black slip.
