The tiles were deeply carved with inscriptions and other ornament and covered with coloured glazes before the final firing. This impressive technique was used in Central Asia only for a brief period, from around 1350 to the early 15th century.\r\n\r\nThe tomb was that of Buyanquli Khan, a Muslim descendant of the great Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan. For a time he was the puppet ruler of parts of Central Asia. He was assassinated by a local warlord in 1358 when he tried to assert his own authority. Buyanquli's tomb was built in a cemetery on the outskirts of Bukhara in Uzbekistan. The entire building was covered in tiles, inside and out.","physicalDescription":"Frieze of earthenware tiles deeply carved with arabesques","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, glazed and carved","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tiles","id":"THES48884"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AY5617","2006BH6026"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tile","id":""}],[{"text":"Tile","id":""}],[{"text":"Tile","id":""}],[{"text":"Tile","id":""}],[{"text":"Tile","id":""}],[{"text":"Tile","id":""}],[{"text":"Tile","id":""}],[{"text":"Tile","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Bukhara","id":"x35893"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1358","earliest":"1353-01-01","latest":"1362-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"255","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"6.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"32","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"measurements include frame","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Formerly above the entrance to the tomb of Buyanquli Khan (d. 1358) in Bukhara.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ornamental tile frieze from the tomb of Buyanquli Khan, Uzbekistan (Bukhara), ca. 1358","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"From the tomb of Buyanquli Khan (died 1358) in Bukhara","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"arabesques","id":"AAT10206"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Jameel Gallery \n\n1-13 Tiles from the Tomb of Buyanquli Khan\r\nUzbekistan, Bukhara\r\nAbout 1358 \r\n\r\n2 Ornamental Frieze \r\nSet horizontally above doorway\r\nCarved earthenware under coloured glaze\r\nMuseum no. 575 to G-1900\r\n","date":{"text":"Jameel Gallery","earliest":"2006-07-20","latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["575-1900","575G-1900","575F-1900","575E-1900","575D-1900","575C-1900","575A-1900","575B-1900"],"accessionNumberNum":"575","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1900,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Tile [1]","Tile [2]","Tile [3]","Tile [4]","Tile [5]","Tile [6]","Tile [7]","Tile [8]"],"assets":["2019LR1354","2019LP7871","2019LW0717"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-29","recordCreationDate":"2003-11-04","availableToBook":false}}
