Founded by Nicholas Sprimont, an extremely gifted goldsmith, modeller and designer from Liège, Chelsea aimed at the top end of the British market, and gained aristocratic and ambassadorial support in its attempts to rival imports from the royal factories of Meissen and Sèvres. Meissen had been the first to make trompe-l'oeil dining wares in vegetable or animal shapes, but it was left to Chelsea (and some of the French tin-glazed earthenware factories) to further explore the idea.","physicalDescription":"Tureen, cover, and stand in the form of a chicken, soft-paste porcelain painted in enamels.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Chelsea Porcelain factory","id":"A9067"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"soft paste porcelain","id":"AAT10665"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Soft-paste porcelain, painted in enamels","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AN5609","2017JU1140"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"50","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"145","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"50","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"145","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"50","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tureen","id":""}],[{"text":"Cover","id":""}],[{"text":"Stand","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1755","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1759-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Stephen, 6th Baron Lilford, in accordance with the wishes of his brother John, 5th Baron Lilford","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"25.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without stand","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"35.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without stand","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"22.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without stand","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Soup tureen with cover and stand, in the form of a chicken, soft-paste porcelain painted in enamels, Chelsea Porcelain factory, London, ca. 1755","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Baker, Malcolm, and Brenda Richardson (eds.), <i>A Grand Design: The Art of the Victoria and Albert Museum</i>, London: V&A Publications, 1999.","id":"AUTH348910"},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"chickens","id":"x35581"},{"text":"hens","id":"x35667"},{"text":"chicks","id":"x34716"},{"text":"leaf","id":"AAT11892"},{"text":"flowers","id":"AAT132399"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.75-1946","C.75A-1946","C.75B-1946"],"accessionNumberNum":"75","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1946,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Tureen","Cover","Stand"],"assets":["2019LP6932","2019LR6561","2019LR6007","2019LT5135","2019LT4588","2019LT4538","2019LU2752","2019LW9907","2019LW5775"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-29","recordCreationDate":"2003-11-03","availableToBook":false}}
