They were not, as is sometimes thought, left in the bed. Instead, a servant would fill the pan with hot coals from the fire, insert it between the sheets using a long pole, and move it around swiftly, just before the master or mistress retired. Some dexterity was needed to avoid scorching the linen. \r\n\r\nThis lid is decorated with pierced work in the form of a vase of flowers.
