The house was built in about 1758 and its first occupant was Thomas Tyrwhitt, the Deputy Secretary at War. The doorway is in the Neo-classical style and appears to date from the 1780s. Since Tyrwhitt moved out in 1762, it was probably erected for a later occupant.\r\n\r\nThe columns are made of pine, but stood on stone bases, so the whole doorway was almost certainly painted stone colour. Here, the base is a reproduction of the stone original and the column has been repainted.","physicalDescription":"Carved pine and moulded composition Neo-classical style door","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Pine","id":"AAT12620"},{"text":"Composition","id":"AAT237906"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"Moulding","id":"AAT53134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neoclassical","id":"AAT21477"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006BB3086","2006BB3042","2006BB3013","2006BB3041","2006BB3014","2013GV4445","2017JV8050","2017KB4951"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"128 (VA)","id":"THES49888"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"WN","box":""},{"current":{"text":"128 (VA)","id":"THES49888"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"WN","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES397612"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES397612"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES397612"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES397974"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES397974"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES397612"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES397617"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES397617"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"H1 (BH)","id":"THES49360"},"free":"","case":"R15","shelf":"4","box":"CN120"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Door","id":""}],[{"text":"Door","id":""}],[{"text":"Fanlight","id":""}],[{"text":"Capital","id":""}],[{"text":"Cornice","id":""}],[{"text":"Cornice","id":""}],[{"text":"Column shell","id":""}],[{"text":"Column rod","id":""}],[{"text":"Column shell","id":""}],[{"text":"Column rod","id":""}],[{"text":"Crate","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1785","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1789-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"From the exterior door to No. 35 Great George Street, London, a house first occupied in 1758.
