Among these designers was Dr John Steward of Wolverhampton, who patented the Euphonicon in 1841. This unorthodox form of upright piano was fitted with violin-type sound boxes, and had its strings attached to a harp-shaped frame. Steward's ideas had little lasting influence on piano design, although Florence Nightingale is said to have played such an instrument.","physicalDescription":"Piano in rosewood case, with a harp-like metal frame strung vertically, the upper part exposed to view. In place of the normal soundboard there are three cello-shaped soundboxes, perforated with forte holes. Tuning is effected by special screw-type wrestpins concealed within the case. The hammer and damper actions are located below the keyboard. There are forte and una corda pedals.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Steward, John (Dr)","id":"A11238"},"association":{"text":"inventor","id":"AAT25845"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Abel & Sons","id":"A11239"},"association":{"text":"retailer","id":"AAT25246"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Cast Iron","id":"AAT11004"},{"text":"Rosewood","id":"AAT12424"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Joining","id":"AAT137062"},{"text":"Graining","id":"AAT53809"},{"text":"Piercing","id":"AAT231153"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cast iron frame, with imitation rosewood graining, rosewood carcase case and fretwork","categories":[{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AF7443"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES383963"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES383963"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"piano","id":""}],[{"text":"keys","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1840","earliest":"1835-01-01","latest":"1844-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"196.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"136.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"12.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"2250","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Crate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1580","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Crate","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"970","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Crate","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"580","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Crate","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Abel & Sons - Musical Repository - Parade Northampton","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"English","medium":"","method":"Inlaid","position":"Nameboard","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Retailer's identification","note":"Retailer's identification; English; Nameboard; Inlaid"},{"content":"101 - W.H.N.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Inside the arms of the case on each side.","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Retailer's identification","note":"Retailer's identification; Inside the arms of the case on each side."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Euphonicon Piano, English, ca. 1840, Abel & Sons, designed by Dr. John Steward","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["342:1-1874","342:2-1874"],"accessionNumberNum":"342","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1874,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","keys","piano"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-06","recordCreationDate":"2003-10-22","availableToBook":false}}
