He had first appeared at the Grand in May 1904. It is one of the many superb caricatures of Edwardian music hall performers that were drawn by the artist George Cooke when he was based at the Grand Theatre. He compiled them in a series of albums.\r\n\r\nDuring this engagement Lennard sang three songs, including one about a ‘gaudy butterfly’, and the sentimental ballad ‘Skylark’ with the lyrics,\r\n\r\nSkylark! Skylark! Winging your flight so high\r\nSkylark! Skylark! When you get up in the sky\r\nIf amongst the angels mother you see\r\nAsk her if she will come down again to poor Daddy and me.\r\n\r\nAlso on the bill with Lennard that week was ‘the Lazy Juggler, Tom Hearn’, another of Cooke’s subjects. Lennard had a fine tenor voice and specialised in ballads, topical songs and parodies. He made his first appearance in London at the Royal Holborn in 1887. He worked in variety and pantomime, and retired in December 1916.","physicalDescription":"Pen, ink and wash caricature on pink paper of Arthur Lennard, shown as a 'poor gaudy butterfly', his head appearing from the butterfly's body, with green forewings patterned with brown, red and white markings, and two-tone blue hindwings with white markings.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cooke, George","id":"A10376"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Pen and ink","id":"x30618"},{"text":"Watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Drawn","id":"x30545"},{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink and wash on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Caricatures & Cartoons","id":"THES48983"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2006AH2172"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES352333"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"caricatures","id":"AAT15634"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Hanley","id":"x32079"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"May 1905","earliest":"1905-05-01","latest":"1905-05-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'POOR GAUDY BUTTERFLY'\r\n'Awfully good.
