It is one of the many superb caricatures of Edwardian music hall performers that were drawn by the artist George Cooke when he was based at the Grand. He compiled them in a series of albums.\r\nRudd made regular appearances at the Grand. He was on the bill there in January 1904, when Cooke sketched him, and again in February 1905, May 1905, January 1906 and January 1907.\r\n\r\nThe diminutive Rudd later became an agent and songwriter. He made his name with ‘Bobbing Up and Down Like This’, a song about the adventures of a henpecked husband and his wife Gert at the seaside. It made Rudd a star and proved equally popular in Australia and South Africa, where Rudd went on tour. By 1919 he was advertising himself as ‘The Nautical Optimist’, performing a comedy routine dressed as a sailor.","physicalDescription":"Pen, ink and wash caricature on pink paper of the music hall performer Austin Rudd, full-length, standing holding a sheet of music. His act at one stage also involved patter and the production of a series of objects from his pockets including fried eggs, sausages, jam tarts, spaghetti, custard pies and live pigeons. The caricature comes from the second album of caricatures in a collection of albums owned by the Theatre Museum compiled by the graphic artist George Cooke. It is labelled by the artist 'Geo Cooke HYS BOOKE' and features music hall performers working in the early 20th century.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Caricature of the Edwardian music hall performer Austin Rudd, from an album of caricatures drawn by George Cooke. 1905 or 1906.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Stars Who Made The Halls' by S.
