It was conceived as part of the furnishings of a drawing room <i>en suite</i> with a sofa and chairs (one of which, W.24-1982, is in the V&A's collection).\r\n\r\nThe outline of the fall-front desk is similar to that of a late 18th-century <i>secretaire á abattant</i> but the showcase on top is a novel feature. The elongated oval and diamond shapes of the showcase make a bold decorative statement and are repeated on the sofa and chairs. It appears Moser used both historical and modern motifs: a sofa of about 1820 in Regensburg Museum, Germany, has similar geometric ornament in its back and sides.","physicalDescription":"Desk of ebonised maple, the four feet with nickel-plated brass caps, supporting five drawers, above which a fall-front bureau writing surface which opens to reveal a number of compartments. Above is a mounted showcase of glass, with an ebonised wooden framework composed of square-sectioned elements, geometrically arranged in patterns of ovals, centred by elongated diamond shapes. The handles and lockplates are of nickel-plated brass, the hinged handles countersunk to lie flush within the backplates.\n\nNote on key: key fits fall front and 2 upper doors but does not appear to operate (2018)","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Moser, Koloman","id":"A11452"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Weiner Werkstätte","id":"A21063"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Maple","id":"AAT12236"},{"text":"nickel","id":"AAT11028"},{"text":"brass (alloy)","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"stain","id":"AAT14968"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cabinet-making","id":"AAT53607"},{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"},{"text":"plating","id":"AAT53991"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Maple, mainly ebonised, with nickel-plated brass handles and locks","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"Secession Movement","id":"AAT111580"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AF2430"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344522"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"key","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Desk","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Vienna (city)","id":"x29246"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1904","earliest":"1904-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"140","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"99.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Wiener Werkstätte trademark","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Locks","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"1) Makers's mark","note":"1) Makers's mark; Locks"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"In the summer of 1904 Margarethe Hellmann was married.
