Luxury and comfort meet in these aristocrats of the slipper world, which pamper the feet in bright red quilted satin. Flying across black velvet are embroidered pheasants presenting a touch of the country. The shoes were made by the British company New and Lingwood. Founded in 1865, the company was formed in Eton to serve the scholars of Eton College and soon gained official status as outfitters to the College. In 1922 New & Lingwood opened a shop in Jermyn Street and although these premises were destroyed in the blitz during the Second World War, they re-established their presence in the street shortly after the war and remain there still.","physicalDescription":"Slippers of black velvet with embroidered pheasants, and quilted red satin lining.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"New & Lingwood","id":"A6297"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"velvet","id":"AAT133711"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"},{"text":"velvet weave","id":"x46483"},{"text":"satin weave","id":"x37324"},{"text":"shoe-making","id":"x40339"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embroidered velvet with satin lining","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2015HK4429","2006BB3434"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES308701"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES308701"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"slipper","id":""}],[{"text":"slipper","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1996","earliest":"1996-01-01","latest":"1996-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the maker","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"10","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"28","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1996/710.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Black velvet slippers with embroidered pheasants and red satin lining, New & Lingwood Ltd., UK, 1996.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"De la Haye, Amy (ed.). <i>The Cutting Edge: 50 Years of British Fashion 1947- 1997.</i> London : V&A Publications, 1997","id":"AUTH354385"},"details":"plate 138","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"pheasants","id":"x35161"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Label for Shoes:Pleasure and Pain\r\n\r\nMen’s quilted slippers\r\n1996\r\nLondon\r\nNew & Lingwood Ltd\r\nSilk velvet with silk embroidery\r\nand leather\r\nGiven by New & Lingwood Ltd\r\nV&A: T.153:1,2-1996","date":{"text":"2015-2016","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2016-12-31"}},{"text":"Luxury and comfort meet in these aristocrats of the slipper world, which pamper the feet in bright red quilted satin.
