The maker, Edward Wakelin, joined the goldsmith George Wickes in Panton Street, off the Haymarket in 1747. His firm eventually became Garrards and the archives of this business include a complete record of all the silver which George 6th Earl of Coventry acquired from Edward Wakelin and his successors between 1751 and 1792. These candlesticks are two from a set of four, which on 8th May 1758 cost £134 4s 8d with an additional charge of 4s for engraving the crests.","physicalDescription":"Silver candlesticks with octagonal bases chased and cast with foliage, shells and scrolls and pendants and swags, fluted baluster stem chased with acanthus and vase shaped socket","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wakelin","id":"A8960"},"association":{"text":"silversmith","id":"AAT25323"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver cast and chased","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Lighting","id":"THES48925"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AF8587","2006BB5748","2006BB5749"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"65 (VA)","id":"THES49734"},"free":"","case":"7","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Candlestick","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1757-1758","earliest":"1757-05-29","latest":"1758-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"M.48-2003","id":"O84524"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support and assistance from the Hugh Phillips Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"37.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"46.15","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Scratch weight on base","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Scratch weight on base"},{"content":"London hallmarks for 1757-8","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Mark of Edward Wakelin","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Candlestick, silver, London hallmarks for 1757-8, mark of Edward Wakelin","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"acanthus","id":"AAT164902"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.49-2003"],"accessionNumberNum":"49","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2003,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2003-09-29","availableToBook":false}}
