A banker by trade, he began designing hats in the mid-1970s for his mother Gertrude to wear to Ascot. Many of David Shilling’s Ascot hats were witty and whimsical. ‘Less about couture and more about theatre’ is how the designer described his most extreme creations. This hat is a typical expression of Shilling’s dramatic flair. Brightly coloured marabou feathers completely cover a large, cone-shaped silhouette and a visor of metal mesh frames the face. Curled strips of wire mesh adorn the tope and sides. The hat is completed by a sprinkling of battery-operated lights over the surface.","physicalDescription":"Hat made of multi-coloured marabou feathers with a metal visor and L.E.D. light system.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Shilling, David","id":"A10275"},"association":{"text":"milliner","id":"AAT25356"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"feathers","id":"x35691"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Marabou feathers with metal and L.E.D. light system","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Hats and headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AM4159","2013GA2131"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA010","id":"THES388292"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1996","earliest":"1996-01-01","latest":"1996-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by David Shilling","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"900","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/10/2020","earliest":"2020-10-08","latest":"2020-10-08"},"part":"","note":"Measured by conservation"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"400","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/10/2020","earliest":"2020-10-08","latest":"2020-10-08"},"part":"","note":"Measured by conservation"},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"470","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/10/2020","earliest":"2020-10-08","latest":"2020-10-08"},"part":"","note":"Measured by conservation"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"\"Less about couture and more about theatre\" is how David Shilling describes his most extreme designs for Ascot.
