She started to design clothes after moving to London in 1964. She combined her artist's eye with a knowledge of garment construction and textiles from around the world, including the West African dashiki and the Berber djellaba, to produce luxurious garments that appealed to an affluent clientele with hippie sensibilities. Her brilliantly coloured, printed silk kaftans were often patch-worked with luxurious brocades or decorated with embroidered embellishments, cleverly combining elements of European and Middle Eastern fashions.\n\nThis kaftan, or <i>abaya</i>, is predominantly made from a 1970 textile print developed by Sandra Munro with reference to the embroidered Samawa carpets made in southern Iraq. In 1970, Thea Porter also made unique one-of-a-kind coats out of actual Samawa carpets, cut to showcase their unique figural designs depicting humans and animals and multicoloured abstract geometric patterns.","physicalDescription":"Kaftan patchwork dress of dark green satin and printed chiffon, assorted silk and metalic woven fabrics and embroideries.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Thea Porter","id":"A4897"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Sandra Munro","id":"A20076"},"association":{"text":"textile designer","id":"x36044"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"chiffon","id":"AAT249449"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"},{"text":"mirror glass","id":"x32916"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"patchwork","id":"AAT249330"},{"text":"embroidered","id":"AAT53653"},{"text":"brocaded","id":"AAT53648"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embroidered and brocaded silks, metal thread, glass and satin and chiffon patchwork","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2016JC3498","2016JC3499","2012FV1215","2016JC3494"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR002","id":"THES392739"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dress","id":""}],[{"text":"Kaftan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1970","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1970-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Whitaker","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1992/1091.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Kaftan patchwork dress, designed by Thea Porter, Great Britain, 1970.
