The long, menacing feathers project forward over two feet in a tunnel-like brim, which almost obscures the face. Gordon initially trained as a fine artist, studying sculpture at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen. She then undertook a two-year millinery course at the Royal College of Art. After 1995 Gordon branched out into knitwear, an area in which she continues to specialise and experiment.","physicalDescription":"Black satin bonnet with pheasant feathers","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gordan, Jo","id":"A10272"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"feathers","id":"x35691"}],"techniques":[{"text":"satin weave","id":"x37324"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Satin, pheasant feathers","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Hats and headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2008BU3447","2008BU3474","2006BC8675"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR006","id":"THES392982"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"hat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1994","earliest":"1994-01-01","latest":"1994-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the designer","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"170","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"240","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"700","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"395","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"mounted"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"305","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"mounted"},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"715","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"mounted"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1996/371.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Kiss of Death', black satin bonnet with pheasant feathers, designed by Jo Gordon, Britain, 1994","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"De la Haye, Amy (ed.). <i>The Cutting Edge: 50 Years of British Fashion 1947- 1997.</i> London : V&A Publications, 1997","id":"AUTH354385"},"details":"plate 112","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Haute couture","id":"THES48861"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Jo Gordon has taken the traditional structure of a poke bonnet to extremes.
