This design for a rococo bureau dressing table features a measurement scale and an outline of the corner of the table top. The presence of these features indicate that this design may have been used within the Chippendale workshop, however many of the plates within Chippendale’s pattern book, the Director, also include such details. Therefore this design may have been intended as a model for other furniture makers or as a presentation piece to show clients. The asymmetrical details within the design also demonstrate the types of decoration that could be chosen. The Director was a popular pattern book produced by Thomas Chippendale in three editions, in 1754, 1755 and 1762, which featured designs for household furniture and instructions for their production. ","physicalDescription":"A design for a rococo bureau dressing table in pencil, ink and wash on paper. The table has a central knee-hole either side of which are two doors with keyholes. At the top of the desk are three drawers which are incorporated into the decorative scheme. The corners, edges and feet of the table are decorated with curved, natural ornamentation. At the bottom and the right hand side of the design is a measurement indicator and an outline of the top of the table which overlaps the design. His company produced high-quality furniture, including some key masterpieces, but Chippendale's outstanding skill was in design.
