The rococo was a fashionable style which became popular during the first half of the 18th century, characterised by features such as curvaceous, natural ornamentation and asymmetry. This type of commode could have been used within a bedroom or a dressing room for example where, despite its decorative features, it could have been used for storage. Commodes with many drawers also featured within Chippendale’s <i>Director</i>, a pattern book of designs which he published in three editions. ","physicalDescription":"A design for a commode in the rococo style in pen and ink and grey wash. The commode is composed from nine drawers in total with three large central drawers and two sets of three drawers either side. The drawers have been designed with handles which would probably be made from brass. The central apron hanging below the drawers is formed from rocaille (frilly natural details) and acanthus leaves and natural ornamntation decorate the feet, corners and bottom of the commode.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Thomas Chippendale Senior","id":"A8241"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"attributed to"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"","id":""}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"pen and ink and grey wash on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"rococo","id":"AAT21155"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HR6718","2020ML1963"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"W","shelf":"9","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}],[{"text":"design","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"Designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1755","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1759-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":"probably"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"15/06/2015","earliest":"2015-06-15","latest":"2015-06-15"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx.","date":{"text":"15/06/2015","earliest":"2015-06-15","latest":"2015-06-15"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Thomas Chippendale was a fashionable designer and cabinet-maker in the eighteenth-century, providing furniture to famous contemporary figures such as David Garrick. His company produced high-quality furniture, including some key masterpieces, but Chippendale's outstanding skill was in design. His pattern-book <i>The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director</i> was published in three editions in 1754, 1755 and 1762 and inspired trade catalogues and pattern-books of fellow designers.
