While the designs are evidently by different hands, this design for a commode has been attributed to Thomas Chippendale, a fashionable London cabinet-maker. \n\r\nThis workshop design for a commode demonstrates the fashion for rococo-inspired furniture which became popular during the first half of the eighteenth-century. The rococo was characterised by curvaceous forms, natural imagery and asymmetry and Chippendale produced many designs for commodes in this style. The asymmetry within this drawing is due to the incorporation of different designs of certain parts of the commode to demonstrate the way in which these could be combined. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A design for a serpentine-shaped rococo commode in pencil and ink on paper, the commode is composed from curved and interlaced decorative detail. Decorative features form six sections on the front of the commode, wich may be intended as drawers. The corners and feet of the commode are asymmetrical.
