A graduate of the Royal College of Art’s millinery course (founded in 1988), he began his career as one of a new generation of innovative, art school trained designers who, during the 1980s, revitalised the British hatmaking industry by reworking traditional hat shapes and materials. Treacy designs occasion and daywear hats for established fashion houses, such as Chanel, as well as for his own couture and diffusion ranges. His most flamboyant creations are popular with women attending ‘Ladies’ Day’ at Royal Ascot, the world's most famous race meeting, where extravagant millinery is as much a part of the occasion as the horseracing. \r\n\r\nPop singer Kylie Minogue modelled this hat for the cover of <i>Tatler</i> magazine in July 1995. Milliners have traditionally used feathers to trim and decorate hats. Here Treacy plays with this idea, cleverly manipulating the shocking pink goose feathers so that they make up the hat’s entire structure.","physicalDescription":"Hat made of shocking pink goose feathers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Treacy, Philip","id":"A5843"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"feathers","id":"x35691"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand stitching","id":"x30413"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand stitched goose feathers","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Formal wear","id":"THES48950"},{"text":"Hats and headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2008BU3469","2008BU3441","2008BU3440","2006AM4148"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343864"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1995","earliest":"1995-01-01","latest":"1995-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"spring summer collection"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the designer","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"49","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1996/626.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Hat made of shocking pink goose feathers, by Philip Treacy, British, spring/summer 1995.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"De la Haye, Amy (ed.). <i>The Cutting Edge: 50 Years of British Fashion 1947- 1997.</i> London : V&A Publications, 1997","id":"AUTH354385"},"details":"plate 117","free":""}],"production":"Spring/Summer 1995 collection.\n\nAttribution note: This hat was modelled by pop singer Kylie Minogue for the cover of Tatler magazine in July 1995.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Feathers have long been used to trim and decorate millinery, but here Philp Treacy skillfully manipulates them to create the entire hat.
