Such items became fashionable in artistic circles during the second half of the Nineteenth Century: unusual hand-made pieces of folk jewellery were considered by many to have a greater spontaneity and interest compared with the precision and repetitiveness of conventional machine-made jewellery. Rossetti encouraged this trend with the jewellery he included in his paintings.\r\n\nJane Morris, known as Janey, was the wife of the artist, designer and socialist William Morris. She was often painted by the artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and in his painting <i>Astarte Syriaca</i>, of 1877, she is wearing this girdle. \r\n\r\nSome of Jane Morris's jewels were bequeathed to the V&A by her daughter May in 1938, including this girdle.","physicalDescription":"A silver girdle, composed of twenty-nine links decorated with floral ornament, a circular buckle and an attachment with three suspension loops.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},{"text":"pierced","id":"AAT231153"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, cast and pierced","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AG6827","2007BR2405","2007BR2404"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"29","shelf":"D","box":"9"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Belt and hanger","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"south"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1650 - 1750","earliest":"1650-01-01","latest":"1750-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by May Morris","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"104.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"36.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of buckle","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The belt was worn by Janey Morris in Dante Gabriel Rossetti's painting <i>Astarte Syriaca</i> (1877).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver belt and hanger, made in the late 17th or early 18th Century, South Germany.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.34-1939"],"accessionNumberNum":"34","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1939,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2016JJ1237","2019LW7788"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-29","recordCreationDate":"2003-09-01","availableToBook":false}}
