His diverse and wide-ranging activities make him the first great representative of the polymath artist of the Renaissance.\r\n\r\nYoung women often prayed to the Virgin Mary to ask for assistance during childbirth, and so reliefs of the Madonna embracing her son were a common feature of Italian Renaissance bedchambers. In this example, the voluminous folds of the Madonna's robe, wrapped around Christ's body, emphasise her motherly tenderness and love.","physicalDescription":"Relief, high relief group of three-quarter length haloed figure of the Virgin holding the naked haloed Christ Child, both swathed in the Virgin's veil.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Terracotta","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[{"text":"Renaissance","id":"AAT21140"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006BK5734","2006AF9753"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES396173"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1410-1430","earliest":"1410-01-01","latest":"1430-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum by the late Mr and Mrs H.
