Born in Turkish-owned Cyprus but educated in England, his 1993 graduation show from Central St Martin's School of Art propelled him into the limelight, as he showed decomposing clothes - garments he had buried in his back garden.  In Vogue, January 1994, he declared 'I am not interested in fashion' and yet remains at the forefront of contemporary British fashion.
