It has a medium-to-low neckline and plain bodice with straight elbow-length sleeves with self-fabric bow on a high-waisted half-belt. The dress is cut with a slightly high waist and the fabric of the skirt forms part of the Watteau back of the dress, which recalls 18th-century sack-back styles. \r\n\r\nThe dress is mounted on a boned silk foundation to which is attached an inner straight silk half petticoat on which is a tulle underskirt with additional frill and an organdie petticoat with its flounce backed with net. This fastens at the centre back with hooks, eyes and a zip fastener. There is a waist band, but no signature.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stiebel, Victor","id":"A2541"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Abraham of Switzerland","id":"A16956"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":"fabric"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"moiré (textile)","id":"x35174"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"calendering","id":"AAT53137"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"moire silk","categories":[{"text":"Marriage","id":"THES48921"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019LM7169","2006AU1691","2006AU1690","2012FP9378","2012FP9379"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"022","id":"THES311167"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Wedding dress","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Switzerland","id":"x29199"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"fabric"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1963","earliest":"1963-01-01","latest":"1963-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr Victor Stiebel","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"34","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"23","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"144","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Centre front - neckline to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"193","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"centre back "}],"dimensionsNote":"The bust is 34 inches and the waist is 23 inches in circumference.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'315 White Moiré wedding dress 39 225gn 99gn 79gn. This dress featured in Victor Stiebel's final collection.\n\nHistorical significance: The dress was from Victor Stiebel's last collection, Summer 1963 after which he closed the business due to ill-health. It was the only dress that remained unsold, and was donated to the V&A by the designer. We also have the very first wedding dress that Stiebel designed in 1932, forty years earlier, (see T.71-1966), so it is fitting that his last wedding dress should be in the collection alongside it.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"White moire silk wedding dress, designed by Victor Stiebel, England, Summer 1963","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"De La Haye, Amy, ed. <u>The Cutting Edge: 50 Years of British Fashion 1947-1997 </u>.
