It was a series of wooden booths with galleries round a courtyard which was destroyed in one of the disastrous fires at the end of the 19th century and now no trace remains. The girl for sale here is a Nubian, sitting on a mat in the courtyard. The more expensive Circassian slaves were kept indoors and were only shown to prospective buyers. In Fisher's Constantinople (1839) the Rev. Robert Walsh described the scene with some perplexity, since a visitor would expect to see 'helpless victims overwhelmed with grief . . .' In fact, he said, 'He sees no such thing: they are singularly cheerful and gay, use every means to attract his attention, and in their various dialects, invite him to purchase them'.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour of a Nubian woman, sitting on a mat","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Preziosi, Aloysius Rosarius Amadeus Raymondus Andreas (5th Count Preziosi)","id":"A21529"},"association":{"text":"Painter","id":"x38307"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"}],"styles":[{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"GG","shelf":"8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Istanbul","id":"x33871"},"association":{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"about 1843","earliest":"1843-01-01","latest":"1843-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed Preziosi","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"This drawing is part of a group of 34 bought by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1907.
