Aloysius Rosarius Amadeus Raymondus Andreas, known as Amadeo, 5th Count Preziosi","type":"generic title"}],"summaryDescription":"Itinerant dervishes were a common sight in Preziosi's Constantinople, many of them having made the long journey from Central Asia. They excited feelings of fascination and horror in European visitors because of their savage appearance, armed as they often were with axes and other weapons. Most were hostile to the Franks, regarding them as infidels who corrupted Muslims. This holy man has a leopard skin which he used as a `post', a kind of carpet on which he would sit to meditate or preside over religious ceremonies in his order of dervishes. [See also D.23-1900]. On a stick is his bowl for alms, made of a coconut shell.","physicalDescription":"A watercolour of an old man, with a begging bowl on a stick","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Preziosi, Aloysius Rosarius Amadeus Raymondus Andreas (5th Count Preziosi)","id":"A21529"},"association":{"text":"Painter","id":"x38307"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour touched with white","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"}],"styles":[{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"GG","shelf":"9","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Istanbul","id":"x33871"},"association":{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"about 1843","earliest":"1843-01-01","latest":"1843-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"20.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed Preziosi","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"This drawing is part of a group of 34 bought by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1907.
