The Sultan, Fatih Mehmet II (the Conqueror) permitted the Greeks to practice their religion under their Patriarch and encouraged them to trade and bring wealth back to the city, which had been severely impoverished since the sack and occupation by the Latins from 1204. The priest exhibited here is shown in his house with ikons of the Virgin and St. Michael or St. George (a saint of Asia Minor) on the wall. Preziosi had married a Greek woman and had his studio in Pera, and thus had many contacts in the Greek community.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour of a Greek Orthodox priest","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Preziosi, Aloysius Rosarius Amadeus Raymondus Andreas (5th Count Preziosi)","id":"A21529"},"association":{"text":"Painter","id":"x38307"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"}],"styles":[{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2016JN3030"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB2A","shelf":"DR106","box":"LOANS"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Istanbul","id":"x33871"},"association":{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"about 1843","earliest":"1843-01-01","latest":"1843-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This drawing is part of a group of 34 bought by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1907.
