It was his first country home and one of his largest projects. Constructed in Iverness-shire, Scotland, the house was made in two types of local stone: blue-grey granite and dark brown basalt. The isolated location of Arisaig presented difficulties in transporting materials, but the house was nonetheless completed in just one year. The project was one of the first occasions on which Webb designed every aspect of the house, including the interior furnishings. This commitment to achieving an overall aesthetic throughout the house later became a defining characteristic of Webb’s work.","physicalDescription":"Contract drawing in ink and coloured wash showing sections through Arisaig House. The sheet is marked 'No. 7' and contains sections through the house at various points marked on the plan. There is also a section through the washhouse. The drawings are highly finished, with grey, brown and red wash indicating intended materials, and heavily annotated with dimensions and notes regarding the proposed construction. The sheet is signed by Webb, several contractors and two witnesses.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Webb, Philip","id":"A1012"},"association":{"text":"architect","id":"THES265157"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Architectural drawings","id":"THES274432"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2023NP2951","2023NP2952"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"201","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1863","earliest":"1863-01-01","latest":"1863-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design for a house at Arisaig for F.D.P.
