Henry (Harry) Webb was a general practitioner, and the house included a doctor's surgery as well as domestic space for Harry, who lived there with two of his unmarried sisters. The design of Welwyn shows Webb's interest in medieval architecture; according to Sheila Kirk, 'the twin buttresses on the short-wing gable are derived from those... sketched by Webb in 1857 at Lindisfarne Priory in Northumberland.' In keeping with its then-rural environment, the house at Welwyn was surrounded by extensive gardens, including an orchard, vegetable garden and flower garden.","physicalDescription":"Contract drawing in ink and coloured wash for 'New Place', Welwyn.
