This is Vishnu in his cosmic sleep on the serpent Ananta, from which he awakes periodically to set right disorder in the universe. Here Vishnu is seen in the central compartment lying on the coiled serpent.\r\n \r\nThe elaborately decorated shrine-tower is topped with four metal finials. The whole temple rests on the back of the tortoise Kurma, the second form in which Vishnu appeared (‘avatara’) to the world. In his tortoise-form, Vishnu served as the bed-rock of the universe during the cosmic churning of the ocean of milk, a key creation myth.\r\n \r\nThe Ranganatha temple at Srirangam is one of the two most important temples dedicated to Vishnu in southern India. Within the inner sanctuary of its main shrine ‘vimana’ is a 6-metre long sculpture of Vishnu-Ananta, known locally as Ranganatha. This ivory model replicates this image, carefully preserving the architectural features of main shrine of Srirangam, with its four finials and barrel-vaulted roof. In all probability the model was made at Srirangam, a renowned centre for ivory carving.","physicalDescription":"A finely carved ivory domestic shrine in the form of a South Indian temple to the Hindu god Vishnu, who is shown in the central compartment lying on the coiled serpent Ananta (Shesha). The elaborately decorated tower (gopuram) is topped with four metal spheres. The whole temple rests on the back of the tortoise Kurma, one of the avatars (incarnations) of Vishnu, and it stands on a low table of carved and stained ivory with four feet of lacquered wood.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ivory, stained and carved, with turned and lacquered wood and brass","categories":[{"text":"Hinduism","id":"THES48941"}],"styles":[{"text":"Nayak","id":"AAT116709"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AH2319"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES369930"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES369930"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shrine","id":""}],[{"text":"Base","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Srirangam","id":"x40232"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"18th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased from Lady Rich","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"56.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"32.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Lady Rich.
