She pioneered the ‘grunge’ aesthetic; gritty, unflinchingly photos with a realist snapshot aesthetic. Self-taught, Day first came to attention when The Face magazine published a series of her friend, the British model Kate Moss. Her nonchalant, nonconforming style became highly sought after and she was commissioned for magazines associated with youth and counterculture, including i-D and Dazed. In 1996 she was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which she photographed alongside a frank chronicle of her friend’s lives. The resulting autobiographical work, ‘Diary’ was published in 2000 and exhibited at The Photographers’ Gallery the same year. She continued to photograph until her death in 2010, aged just 48. She was one of the pioneers of a style that is candid and hard-hitting. Day continues to work for style magazines such as Ray Gun, Dazed and Confused and Vogue Homme International. In contrast to the traditional and glamorous image which dominated fashion photography during the late 1980's, Day’s work represents a more informal, confrontational and confessional approach to the medium.
