The façade, with its characteristic lion statues flanking it, was erected in the 9th century, although the rest of the palace may be older. In addition to serving as the living quarters of the Byzantine emperors, the palace was also the official residence of the Latin rulers of Constantinople in the 13th century. The part of the palace shown in the drawing no longer survives, having been demolished in 1873 to make way for a new railway line. The stone lions are held in the collection of the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul. ","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Richard P. Spiers.
