Ruf and Louis E. Frost.  The late 19th century saw the arrival of many widely marketed 'quack remedies' and unregulated drugs such as this, many of which turned out to be highly toxic. These pills contained a coal-tar derivative called acetanilide and deaths were reported within the first year of their availability. The makers were involved in lengthy court battles over warning labels and the right to continue selling their untested drugs, and were the subject of much criticism and discussion in American medical journals of the 1890s to the 1910s. The company aggressively marketed themselves to doctors with promotional posters and calendars.  This one depicting an attractive young woman is in contrast to the macabre marketing materials they usually favoured. In an unusual marketing choice, more akin to Halloween cards rather than pain relief, they became known for their skeleton headed adverts with creepy figures drawn by Dr. Louis Crusius.  Antikamnia is likely to have been effective at pain relief despite the dangers.
