It was most commonly used in the minstrel performance tradition. White performers (and sometimes black) used burnt cork, greasepaint or shoe polish to blacken their skin and exaggerate their lips. The look was completed with 'woolly' wigs, gloves, tailcoats and/or ragged clothes. Stereotypes embodied in the stock characters of blackface minstrelsy played a significant role in cementing and proliferating racist attitudes.\nBlackface spread from the USA to become extremely popular in Britain.  Forming in 1865, the Moore and Burgess Minstrels began performing at St. James's Hall, Piccadilly, London and remained on the bill for approximately 35 years.  Billing themselves 'The Oldest Established Entertainment in the World', they merged in 1900 with another group called the Mohawk Minstrels.  The final performaces as the Mohawk Moore and Burgess Minstrels took place in 1904.  Shockingly, the genre persisted throughout the 20th century with performances by similar racist groups on British television until 1978 with 'The Black and White Minstrel Show'.
