London: Constable, 1923:\n\n'As Director of the engraving class at South Kensington, Frank Short represents a distinct tendency from that initiated at the Slade School by Legros.  In the certainty of his technique he is perhaps unequalled, and he gives far more encouragement to the calmer study of processes, to the scientific calculations of strength and character of bitings and the like, than ever did Legros, who might retort that any recurrence of technical failure is nothing to the possible loss of freshness and spontaneity.  It may be mentioned too that one of the disputed tenets of his school is the practice of steel facing the plate, which he declares makes no appreciable difference to the quality of his impression.'"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of  Engraving, Illustration and Design & Department  of Paintings, Accessions 1919, London</u>: Printed Under the Authority of His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1921"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.2424-1919"],"accessionNumberNum":"2424","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1919,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
