Montigny became Claus's pupil in plein air painting in 1893 and soon after they started a relationship that would last until his death in 1924. During the First World War, Claus and his wife Charlotte Dufaux emigrated to London and Montigny accompanied them. She joined the Women’s International Art Club and spent time making etchings and painting in Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Returning to Belgium after the war, Montigny faced considerable financial difficulties in a country severely devastated by the war. Her work enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the late 20th century with exhibitions in Flemish towns in the 1980s and a major retrospective in 1995 at the Musée Pissarro in France.","physicalDescription":"Etching depicting a scene in a military hospital with four men (three with crutches) standing in a line to talk to a seated man who is accompanied by a nurse.
