Webb Bequest 1919 \r\n\r\nFormerly attributed to Benjamin West, but clearly a South Italian drawing, probably Neapolitan, and possibly by Solimena or a follower of his. The placing of the figures in tiers on steps and platforms is a characteristic device of Solimena and his school. The handling is also reminiscent of him. Compare for example the erect woman stretching out her left arm with the standing woman in the 'Allegory' in the British Museum (no. 1946,7-13-910, reproduced in F. Bologna, Francesco Solimena, Naples, 1958, fig. 1I8). There are certain similarities between the two figures, especially in the oblique strokes which define the folds of the drapery below the hips. Nor is the somewhat worn and faint chalk drawing on the back inconsistent with Solimena's style. Compare the study of a kneeling youth in the Albertina (no. 24°°9; reproduced in Albertina Catalogue, 6, no. 629, verso). \r\n"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of Engraving, Illustration and Design & Department of Paintings, Accessions 1919</u>, London: Printed Under the Authority of His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1921"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.3997-1919"],"accessionNumberNum":"3997","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1919,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-07","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
