Damage around the neckline suggests that it once belonged to a complete figure of the Buddha, probably standing, though possibly seated. Large numbers of Buddha images were produced in the Dvaravati Kingdom. Other sculptures of this size appear to have been used as architectural ornaments, and it is possible that this sculpture was originally set in a niche on the exterior of a brick temple.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sandstone","id":"AAT11376"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"AAT53618"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sandstone","categories":[{"text":"Buddhism","id":"THES48984"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[{"text":"Dvaravati","id":"AAT19204"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006BF2729","2019LX7413","2019LX7411"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"47A (VA)","id":"THES49797"},"free":"","case":"1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Head","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Dvaravati kingdom, Thailand","id":"THES271330"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Thailand","id":"x30017"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"7th century to 8th century","earliest":"0600-01-01","latest":"0800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought from Sotheby's in 1961.
