The copper alloy has a dark patina and significant traces of gilding. It shows the Buddha at the moment of enlightenment, specifically when he succeeds in defeating the forces sent by Mara, the embodimant of distraction. At this moment, the Buddha touches the Earth, calling the Earth Goddess to witness his realisation of enlightenment. This posture has two names: <i>bhumiparsa-mudra</i> (\"touching the earth\") and<i> maravijaya</i> (\" victory over Mara\").\r\n\r\nThis object is part of a group (IS.88 to 116-1958) given by Mrs. R.H. Carlisle.
