Benwell may have been taught in the art of the miniature and pastel by Katherine Read. Like many other women artists during this period, she turned to painting in miniature and pastel as a pathway towards financial independence and artistic agency. Benwell exhibited at the Incorporated Society of Artists, the Royal Academy, and the Society of Artists between 1761 and 1774. She was succesful during her life. Benwell's portrait of Queen Charlotte was highly celebrated and circulated widely as an engraving.","physicalDescription":"Portrait miniature on ivory of Mrs. Bradney in a pink dress against a dark background","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Benwell, Mary","id":"A9764"},"association":{"text":"made by","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour on ivory","categories":[{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Miniatures","id":"THES269968"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[{"text":"Georgian","id":"AAT21048"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2024NR8092","2024NR8093","2006AG1618","2017KE2197"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"RMC","shelf":"2","box":"C"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"miniature (painting)","id":"AAT33936"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1772","earliest":"1772-01-01","latest":"1772-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"48","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"38","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Summary Catalogue of Miniatures in the Victoria and Albert Museum</i>, Emmett Microform, 1981.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Dated 1772","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"Portrait miniatures were frequently exchanged between loved ones and family in eighteenth-century England as tokens of affection and remembrance.
