Nicholas Hilliard, in his late fifties, was then a prominent artist. This miniature of the king epitomise both the opulence of early Stuart court imagery and the artist’s refined style. Departing from his signature blue background, Hilliard introduces a striking red curtain to accentuate the depth, richness, and regal display. James exudes self-assurance in a jewel-encrusted doublet and the blue sash of the Order of the Garter.
