The style of the painting locates the scene in the former principality of Bundi in Rajasthan in north-west India. It was probably made for a local nobleman or ruler by artists local to the area.\r\n\r\nAlthough mango trees grow wild in the jungles of India, this must be a cultivated specimen since the fruit of the wild tree is inedible. The original word for mango in the Tamil language was ‘man-kay’, which was adapted by Portuguese settlers in India into ‘manga’ and eventually by the British into the familiar mango.","physicalDescription":"Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper,a man in a red robe is standing about to hurl a stone at a mango tree laden with fruit.
