Initially working in the medical service of the East India Company, during his twenty year residency in Agra he was promoted to Deputy Inspector of Hospitals where he led the fight against cholera. Murray's photographic career developed in 1849 until 1865 and during his travels  to Sikandra, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra he recorded various historic sites including a series of panoramas of the Taj Mahal in Agra.
